— Amanda in "In the Kitchen" |
Amanda the Adventurer is the titular protagonist of the children's animated series Amanda the Adventurer. She and her anthropomorphic sheep companion Wooly take the audience on everyday adventures.
Amanda was inspired and voiced by Rebecca Colton, the adopted daughter of show creator Sam Colton. However, Rebecca's soul is implied to be trapped in Amanda's body, presumed to be the result of Hameln Entertainment's experiments, and is attempting to free herself.
Appearance[]
Amanda is a young African American girl with a dark almond skin complexion, alongside her black poofy hair that is styled into twin afro-puffs resembling mouse ears. Whenever Amanda is stable, her brown eyes normally look doll-like, but when she turns unstable, her eyes become twitching with contracted black pupils. She wears a yellow shirt and aquamarine shorts with purple socks and yellow sneakers.
Personality[]
At first glance, Amanda seems to be an average cartoon character for young audiences: A kind, sweet, and helpful girl who helps viewers pick the right options.
However, the more episodes that Riley Park watches, the more aggressive and sinister Amanda becomes in them. Every time Riley answers incorrectly, Amanda becomes irritated and impatient to the point where she makes things easier for the viewers (mainly for herself) by removing the incorrect options or forcing the viewer to give the correct answer.
If Riley upsets Amanda enough, a monstrous creature will enter Riley's house, where it proceeds to slaughter them.[2][3] However, Amanda is later shown to care about Riley. In "When You're Feeling Bad", Amanda begs the creature to not kill Riley as they are trying their best to make her feel better.
The Amanda the Adventurer tapes at the Kensdale Public Library gives more insight into Amanda's personality, showing that Amanda is not evil and merely wanted to be at peace. She shows more child-like behavior, such as when the Opossum stole one of her coins in "Let's Plan a Trip". She also shows less patience for Wooly due to his intrusive nature. She can be sarcastic in some episodes.
History[]
Background[]
- Further information: Rebecca Colton
Amanda began in 1999 as the protagonist of the live-action Amanda the Adventurer, portrayed and inspired by Rebecca Colton.[4][5] These roles were retained following Hameln Entertainment's purchase of the show in late 2000, turning it into an animated series. An anthropomorphic sheep named Wooly was added as the deuteragonist and Amanda's friend.
Unbeknownst to the show creator and Rebecca's adoptive father, Sam Colton, Hameln intended to experiment with Rebecca to summon something demonic and bind her to the show. After abducting Sam in 2001, Hameln gained custody of Rebecca.[6][7] New episodes of Amanda the Adventurer released around the time contained questionable matters, with one episode having Amanda say that "mommies and daddies aren't always right."[6]
In or after 2002,[8] through what is implied to have involved surgical means, Hameln placed Rebecca's consciousness inside of Amanda, before seemingly disposing of her body. An entity that shared Amanda's hair was also summoned, which became attracted to VHS tape recordings of Amanda the Adventurer and attacked those that made Amanda upset. Amanda, however, would talk to some of her viewers directly, causing them to enter trance-like states before disappearing, as in the case of Lauren and Jordan Cook.
Amanda retains her memories as Rebecca, even claiming she can sometimes feel herself "rotting [...] far away."[2] As a result, she wishes to be free again.
Encountering Riley[]
In February 2023,[9] Kate Park, an investigator of Amanda the Adventurer, bequeathed her house in Kensdale, Ohio, to her nibling, Riley Park. In a letter she sent shortly before her death, Kate stated her need to pass on a tape in the attic, containing an episode of Amanda the Adventurer.
The episode, "In the Kitchen", involves Amanda and Wooly preparing an apple pie. To cut apples, Riley gives the correct answer of using a knife. Wooly is uncomfortable as they're using the knife without supervision, but Amanda only mocks him. She then cuts the apples and gathers the other ingredients, and asks Riley to help find the sugar. Afterward, the pie is prepared, but Wooly is concerned about using the oven without parental help. Amanda's "not sure where they are right now", so they continue anyway. She gives the instructions for baking the pie, and afterward, they celebrate their finished pie.
In "In Your Neighborhood", Amanda wants to send a gift to her friend, first visiting a corner store to buy a card. In the scene, a code is found that Riley inserts into a toy named Blabbot.[note 1] Upon doing so, Amanda states she "[doesn't] want to play anymore right now", before the episode abruptly ends.
In an alternate version of "Oh No! Accidents!", Amanda claims Wooly had an accident, the panicked latter failing to reassure her he is fine. Amanda asks Riley to find Wooly's broken part, being his head. To "prepare the patient" for "Doctor Amanda", she gives Wooly a drink, Amanda reassuring him that it is merely just pretending. This drink is a drug that causes Wooly to fall unconscious. In a bloody operation room with an unconscious Wooly on the operating table, Amanda asks Riley what tool they should use to operate on Wooly's brain, being a saw, hammer, or forceps. After giving excuses for not using an object, she reveals she tricked Riley and that they will use all three, and as Wooly wakes up, Amanda appears on top of him with the saw. The two engage in a struggle, Wooly pleading for help as Amanda asks Riley who they will assist. Riley chooses Wooly,[note 2] causing Amanda to express disappointment, before stating that she can finish the operation by herself. She tells Riley to go away as she raises the saw, followed by static and the sound of Wooly screaming.
In "We Can Share", Amanda, alone, explains to Riley that people can share many things when they are friends, such as crayons, toys, and snacks. Opening her lunchbox to reveal unconventional snacks, Amanda asks Riley which they would like. Afterward, she explains that friends can also share secrets and asks Riley if they would like to hear her secret. Upon accepting,[note 3] Amanda reveals she is "out there... somewhere...", followed by the TV loudly glitching out. Alarmed by the occurrence, Riley threw a brick at the TV, destroying it.
At the library[]
After meeting Joanne Cook, Riley continued their investigation at the Kensdale Public Library, finding more tapes containing Amanda the Adventurer episodes.
In "Let's Plan a Trip", Amanda invites Riley to plan imaginary trips around the world. By helping her obtain coins to buy tickets for her "magic train", Amanda plans trips to Paris, Mexico City, and London. After gathering the coins for the last stop, a previously hidden opossum appears and attempts to steal them. Riley aids Amanda in getting the opossum to flee.[note 4] At the episode's end, Amanda boards her magic train. While "fun," she still wishes to be able to "go see the world."
Relationships[]
These are notable relationships with Amanda.
Wooly[]
Wooly is Amanda's sidekick and best friend.
In Amanda the Adventurer: Pilot Episode, Wooly fears Amanda's sudden changes in attitude, with Amanda intervening every time he tries to talk to the viewer. In "Finding Treasure", Amanda kills him after he rebels against her.
In the main game, Wooly is not so afraid of Amanda, though he is more nervous. When Wooly tried to tell Riley something important, Amanda broke his knee. The next time he tried this, Amanda claimed Wooly's head was "broken" and that she could fix it. Whatever action was chosen next, Amanda was implied to have killed him.
Wooly reappears in Amanda the Adventurer 2, with Amanda being far more overtly hostile in her dialogue. He continues his attempts to keep the show on track and kid-friendly. In "Do You Feel Safe?", if the player tells Amanda they are afraid of Wooly, she looks annoyed and says, "Really?"
Riley Park[]
Amanda's relationship with Riley is determined by the player's choices. When Riley answers a question incorrectly, especially intentionally, Amanda becomes frustrated and retaliates by forcing Riley to answer correctly.
In Amanda the Adventurer 2, once again her relationship with Riley is determined by the player's choices, though it is implied that she is starting to trust them. Amanda refers to Riley by name for the first time in "Goodnight!", when she says "Goodnight... Riley." She gets quite happy if the player tells Amanda they trust her in "Do You Feel Safe?" and conversely feels sad when told they are afraid of her.
Kate Park[]
In "In Your Neighborhood", Amanda reveals Kate is her friend, with Amanda wanting to mail her a card and cookies. In "Let's Plan a Trip", if Riley answers by wanting to visit Kate, Amanda wishes she could still visit her, and if the player answers that they trust Kate in "Do You Feel Safe?" Amanda tells the player that she trusted her a lot and wishes she could still talk to her.
Hameln Entertainment[]
Amanda seems to fear Hameln Entertainment, as whenever their name is mentioned in the prompts for Amanda the Adventurer 2, she instantly has a concerned look on her face, saying that the player should not speak of them. In "Do You Feel Safe?", when Amanda asks who the player trusts, if the player chooses to say Hameln, she will aggressively tell the player to go away before ejecting the VHS tape.
Meatman[]
Amanda is afraid of Meatman from the Meat Store. In the second version of "In Your Neighborhood", she is powerless to prevent her and Wooly from entering the store, and she suddenly becomes terrified to the point where she destroys the shop itself, along with other buildings. When his name is mentioned in any of the prompts in Amanda the Adventurer 2, she instantly becomes terrified, either asking the player to stop mentioning him or desperately asking why the player would want to hurt her. Meatman is implied to represent a Hameln surgeon who operated on Rebecca.
Sam Colton[]
Amanda appears to have some distant memory of Sam, not being able to fully recognize who he was. In "Let's Plan a Trip", she desperately tries to remember Sam when the screen abruptly changes into a distorted video of footsteps, possibly being Sam's, before the screen changes back. She seems to remember some things about him, however, and his original agreement with Hameln Entertainment. This can be seen in "Do You Feel Safe?", where if the player responds to Amanda saying they trust Sam, she admits he was very trusting, but that it could also be a mistake.
Trivia[]
- As the title of her show implies, Amanda's character is heavily inspired by Dora Márquez, the main star of Dora the Explorer.
- Amanda has had two voice actresses in the form of Chelsea Lecompte, the partner of the game's creator James Pratt, in Amanda the Adventurer: Pilot Episode, and currently Blair Greene-Osako after she landed the role in order to pay homage to Amanda's African American roots and have it be more authentic.
- In "In Your Neighborhood", Amanda says she has multiple friends, though her only notable ones are Kate and Wooly.
- She dislikes spiders and snakes as she finds them scary.[3]
- Amanda loves mint chocolate chip ice cream.[10]
- This was said right after Lauren disappeared; her parents tried to coax her out with her favorite flavor, mint chocolate chip.
- In the second game in the tape "Goodnight!" Amanda possesses a fear of the dark, begging for Riley to find her a nightlight as the entire library itself goes pitch black.
- Amanda is left-handed. This is shown in the episode "In the Kitchen" where she holds the knife and aims it at Wooly pretending to be a pirate, as well as in the episode "We Can Share" where she is shown drawing a picture of Mr. Fox on the couch.
- Interestingly enough, Rebecca is right-handed as shown in "Security Footage" where she signs the contract presented by the Hameln Director.
