Joanne Cook |
“ | I know she trusted you to pick up where she left off, and I took advantage of that trust to bring you here. To find the tapes. I don't know if you can ever forgive me. But I do know that Hameln needs to be brought down. I won't be their pawn anymore. | ” |
— Joanne to Riley |
Joanne Cook was a woman who became close to Kensdale Public Library librarian Kate Park. After the disappearance of her younger brother, Jordan Cook, she found the library to be her only place of safety. She knew about Kate's occult research and too believed there was something evil surrounding Amanda the Adventurer.
Following Kate's death, Joanne brought her nibling Riley Park to the library to destroy the Amanda the Adventurer tapes and find a way to stop Hameln Entertainment. Before she and Riley could leave, Joanne was killed by a demonic entity attracted to the tapes.
History[]
Background[]
Joanne's younger brother, Jordan Cook, was a fan of Amanda the Adventurer, which Joanne thought was "really sweet" and "wholesome". Later, she occasionally found Jordan standing in front of their TV in a trance-like state and felt as if Amanda was talking to him. Jordan later vanished, an occurrence that impacted Mrs. and Mr. Cook, who eventually died due to grief. While the police suspected it was a kidnapping, Joanne figured there was more to the case, but nobody believed her. She would later find the Kensdale Public Library her only safe place.
Two years later, Joanne sent a pair of letters to librarian Kate Park after she heard about her "other kind of work" that researched Amanda the Adventurer's production company, Hameln Entertainment, and the demonic references placed in the show. Joanne would become close with Kate, grateful to have someone she could trust.
In 2023,[1] still attempting to find Jordan, Joanne was told one day he was trapped in the Amanda the Adventurer tapes, and she could free him by smashing them. With Kate owning a collection of tapes, Joanne went to her house and demanded that she give them to her. The Entity, protecting the tapes, attacked, and Kate escaped after being urged by Joanne. Although Joanne did not want to be at fault for Kate getting hurt, she was killed in a car crash as she recorded a frantic message warning her nibling Riley not to watch the tapes, also believing Joanne was dead. Joanne survived the attack, sustaining a big scratch mark on her cheek.
Joanne would conceal her identity using a mask, likely to avoid being caught by Hameln, who she later claimed was using her.
Riley and the library[]
Almost immediately after Riley destroyed the TV in Kate's attic, Joanne entered and met them, introducing herself as a close friend of Kate and her being the reason she knows them. Figuring Riley needed rest, Joanne took them to an unspecified place.
On the night of February 20, 2023,[1] Joanne, in her car, told Riley they were heading to Kensdale Public Library to find answers in Kate's office. Riley explained to her what had happened. The two entered the library past closing time using Kate's key, followed by Joanne handing Riley a radio so they could stay connected as she kept watch outside.
As Riley watched more Amanda the Adventurer tapes, Joanne periodically checked on them through the radio, reporting her sightings of a creature in the area. She witnessed Kate's house being destroyed by a fire and believed Hameln was the cause. Later, thinking the creature was following her, Joanne reentered the library so she and Riley could gather the tapes and leave.
Death[]
After finding a cassette tape, Riley went to Kate's office to see Joanne observing the damage the Entity caused. After she left to gather the tapes, Riley played the cassette containing Kate's message, which she recorded shortly before the accident. Joanne overheard and revealed to Riley that it was her fault Kate died. She explained how her brother was one of the kids who vanished and what happened at Kate's before her death. She saw the letter Kate sent to Riley and took advantage of Kate's trust in her so they could destroy the tapes. Joanne made it clear that she did not expect forgiveness from Riley and expressed her determination to bring down Hameln.
Upon hearing a howl outside the library, Joanne urged Riley to take the tapes and enter a secret bunker in Kate's office. Despite promising to follow, the source of the howl—a demonic sheep-like entity—entered the library and gruesomely tore Joanne apart. Her final moments of agony were heard on Riley's radio as they descended into the bunker.
Trivia[]
- Joanne is the first human character to appear in-engine and be met in person.
- Joanne is left-handed. This is shown when she holds a hammer to smash the tapes in the normal ending.
- This would make Joanne the second lefty in the series behind Amanda, shown in "We Can Share".
- Lucía Lobosvilla, Joanne's voice actress, described voicing the character in the true ending as "harrowing." She mentioned she drew the performance from real-life experiences.[2]
