— Riley's letter to Kate |
Riley Park is the protagonist of the Amanda the Adventurer trilogy.
Riley moved into their aunt Kate's house in Kensdale, Ohio, following her death. In the attic, Riley discovered VHS tapes containing episodes of Amanda the Adventurer, where they uncovered Amanda's situation and the background of the show's development. After meeting Joanne Cook, they traveled to the Kensdale Public Library to find and destroy more of the tapes. Subsequently, Joanne was attacked by an entity, and Riley escaped into a bunker below the library.
Appearance[]
As each Amanda the Adventurer game is played from a first-person perspective, Riley's appearance is not seen. Their gender is ambiguous, with the use of they/them pronouns on each game's Steam page and from Amanda.[1][2]
History[]
Background[]
At some point in Riley's early life, they were gifted Roller-skates from their aunt Kate, writing a letter thanking her and mentioning their father falling over while using them.
Investigating Amanda[]
In February 2023,[3] Riley received a letter from Kate. In it, she vaguely talks about her upcoming fate and bequeathing her house in Kensdale to Riley. She asks them to look for a tape but warns that there is "no turning back" after watching it.
On February 20,[3] Riley found the aforementioned tape in the house's attic and watched it on a TV next to it. The tape contained an episode of a children's cartoon titled Amanda the Adventurer, starring the titular protagonist, Amanda, and her best friend, Wooly, an anthropomorphic sheep. Somehow, Riley was able to interact with the show, being able to answer Amanda's questions and choose objects that she needed.
Riley found more tapes of the show through hints in the episodes, which were used to solve puzzles of objects that mysteriously appeared and moved around the attic. They soon realized the show is not all that it seems and that something evil may be surrounding it.
When the TV violently glitched out after watching "We Can Share", Riley used a brick to destroy it. Afterward, Joanne Cook—incognito—entered the attic. She explained that she and Kate were close friends. Joanne took Riley someplace to rest, and they set off for Kensdale Public Library, hoping they could find something in Kate's office.
At the library[]
Using Kate's key, Joanne and Riley entered the library past closing, and the former gave the latter a radio as she kept watch outside. After solving more puzzles, Riley discovered more Amanda the Adventurer tapes, which Joanne asked them to gather so she could destroy them. Later, Joanne told Riley that a fire had been started at Kate's house, which was too severe to save the building.
While watching "When You're Feeling Bad", Riley was nearly attacked by the Entity, but Amanda stopped it, as Riley was cheering her up with a story. Amanda stopped the Entity again when it attempted to attack Riley after finishing the story. Later, in "Let's Hunt for Treasure!", Amanda demanded that Riley find another treasure after being disappointed with the one she discovered, threatening them with the Entity. Riley gave the Entity a Wooly puppet found in a display case in the library. The creature tore the puppet apart, followed by a howl outside that caused it to retreat toward Kate's office, destroying the door.
After finishing "Do You Feel Safe?", which involved not helping Amanda and Wooly with the Opossum, Riley found a cassette containing Kate's final message for Riley. By this point, Joanne had reentered the library and was gathering the tapes so she and Riley could leave. Riley played the cassette tape in Kate's office and learned that Kate died in a car accident while frantically warning Riley not to watch the tapes. Joanne overheard and took the blame for Kate's death, as an individual told Joanne her missing brother, Jordan Cook, was trapped in the tapes and could be freed by smashing them. After Joanne went to Kate's house demanding her collection of tapes, the Entity attacked, which caused Kate to flee.
Having revealed her identity to Riley, Joanne believed Hameln Entertainment set fire to Kate's house to destroy her tapes and expressed her goal to stop them. A howl by the Wooly Entity prompted Joanne to give the tapes to Riley and tell them to leave. The creature entered the library and mutilated Joanne. Riley, with an unlabeled tape, descended into a secret bunker in Kate's office.
Trivia[]
- Kate refers to Riley as "Querida" in the Spanish version of Amanda the Adventurer, and "Querida" stands for "Dear" referring to a female person, which could either confirm Riley's gender or just be a translation error.
- In the teaser trailer for Amanda the Adventurer 3, at the timestamp 0:12,[4] a masculine grunt can be heard from (presumably) Riley. This is another possible confirmation of Riley's gender.
- Riley might be of English or Korean descent by their surname.
