"When You're Feeling Bad"

"When You're Feeling Bad" is a tape found in Amanda the Adventurer 2. It is obtained in a second run by completing two sides of the activity block based on the hints in "Goodnight!" or "Let's Start the Day!".

Synopsis[]

Wooly tries to cheer Amanda up with a story.

Transcript[]

An eye and meat flash on the screen before showing Amanda lying on her sofa, with Wooly standing in front of the camera.

  • Wooly: "Oh... okay... Um... Hi! I'm... I'm Wooly! [pause] Today we're going to... We're going to... Uh... I don't know what we're going to do. Amanda?... Amanda? What do you want to do?"
  • Amanda: "I don't care. I don't feel right."
  • Wooly: "Maybe doing something will make you feel better?"
  • Amanda: "I already tried drawing some pictures, but that didn't help. [to Riley] What do you do when you're feeling bad?"

A seven-letter prompt appears.

If the player types "Sob" or "Cry":

  • Amanda: "I wish I could. I feel like there's nothing left in me."

If the player types "Break":

  • Amanda: "I'm broken. You think that counts?"

If the player types "Wooly" or "Woolie":

  • Amanda: [sighs] "I don't even want to hear his name right now."
  • Wooly: "Hey, I just want to help!"

If the player types "Scream" or "Yell":

Camera zooms into Amanda.

  • Amanda: "AAAAH!!!"

Camera zooms back.

  • Amanda: "Nope. That didn't help at all. [sarcastically] Great suggestion."

After typing any other answer:

  • Amanda: "Good for you."

  • Wooly: [gasps] "Amanda... how about an adventure?"
  • Amanda: "What makes you think I want to go on an adventure right now?! Are you even paying attention?! I feel... weird! Leave me alone!"
  • Wooly: "...Well, I'm going to go on an adventure in my mind. [to Riley] You can come along with me if you like. Telling a story is like going on an adventure. What's your favorite kind of story?"

An eight-letter prompt appears.

If the player types "Sad" or "Tragedy":

  • Wooly: "Oh, we don't like those kinds of stories around here at all!"

If the player types "Romance" or "Love", Wooly giggles and blushes.

If the player types "Comedy", "Funny", or "Silly", Wooly pulls out a clown nose and puts it on his nose.

  • Wooly: "I like those kinds of stories, too!"

Wooly's eyes swirl around like in a cartoon.

  • Wooly: "Honk honk!"
Looking embarrassed, Wooly removes and stores his clown nose.

If the player types "Horror", "Scary", or "Thriller":

  • Wooly: "T-t-those kinds of stories are too scary for me!"

The screen distorts as the mouth of a pig, meat, and a bright open doorway flash.

  • Wooly: [echoing] "No!"

The sequence stops.

  • Wooly: [breathing heavily] "Wow! I wish I hadn't asked..."

After typing any other answer:

  • Wooly: "That sounds neat! I'll have to check out some stories like that."

  • Wooly: "Okay, a story! Hm. Once upon a time... Hey, why don't you help me tell the story? See if you have anything there that will help you follow along. Once upon a time, there was a brave knight..."

Four pop-up books have appeared on a table behind Riley: The Lonely Knight, The Caring Princess, The Hungry Hungry Dragon!, and The Annoying Little Wizard.

  • Amanda: [sighs]
  • Wooly: [to Riley] "It's okay! Take your time."

Later:

  • Amanda: "How long is this going to take?"
  • Wooly: "Hey now! You can't rush perfection!"

After returning to the TV:

  • Wooly: "Is that the choice you wanna go with?"

A checkmark and X prompts appear on the screen. If the player clicks the X:

  • Wooly: "Okay, let's try again, then."

Wooly retells the current part of the story.

Amanda's drawings hint at the correct story to tell. After opening the knight and princess books and choosing to continue, the voice of a male narrator surprises Wooly.

  • Narrator: "Once upon a time, there were a knight and a princess who loved each other very much. But one day, the knight had to leave the princess behind."
  • Wooly: "Um, where did that princess come from? Let's get this story back on track."

After opening the knight book and choosing to continue:

  • Wooly: "Good job! There's our brave knight."
  • Amanda: [groans]
  • Wooly: "Okay, let's keep going!"

After opening something other than the knight book and choosing to continue:

  • Wooly: "Um... That doesn't match the story I'm telling, does it? Let's get this story back on track."

  • Wooly: "The knight went to see a wise wizard, who delivered a dangerous quest."

After returning to the TV:

  • Wooly: "Do you want to stick with this choice?"

If the player clicks the X:

  • Wooly: "All right, let's try that one again."

Wooly retells the current part of the story.

After opening the princess and wizard books and choosing to continue:

  • Narrator: "The princess went to visit a wise wizard. She asked the wizard to help her see her knight again."
  • Wooly: "No, the wizard didn't talk to the princess. The wizard talked to the knight to give them a quest! Okay... moving on."

Wooly freezes and his eyes turn black. Riley turns to see the Colton Anomaly poised to strike behind them. It stops to listen to Amanda.

  • Amanda: "Wait! They're trying! Please?"

The creature quickly looks at Riley, then gives Amanda a snap before going to the back of the Kid's Corner, hanging upside down. Wooly has returned to normal.

  • Wooly: "The quest!"

After opening the knight and wizard books and choosing to continue:

  • Wooly: "Right! You're good at storytelling. Let's see what this quest is!"

Wooly freezes and his eyes turn black.

  • Amanda: "Wait!"

Riley turns to see the Colton Anomaly poised to strike behind them. It stops to listen to Amanda.

  • Amanda: "They've helped me before. Give them a chance to try. Please?"

  • Wooly: "Are you even listening to my story?! Okay... moving on."

  • Amanda: "Wait!"

Riley turns to see the Colton Anomaly poised to strike behind them. It stops to listen to Amanda.

  • Amanda: "They've helped me before. Give them a chance to try. Please?"

The creature quickly looks at Riley, then gives Amanda a snap before going to the back of the Kid's Corner, hanging upside down. Wooly has returned to normal.

  • Wooly: "The quest!"

  • Wooly: "There was a dragon that guarded many riches in a dark, faraway cave."

After returning to the TV:

  • Wooly: "Do you want to keep your choice?"

If the player clicks the X:

  • Wooly: "Go take a look again, then."

Wooly retells the current part of the story.

After opening the wizard and dragon books and choosing to continue:

  • Narrator: "The wizard, being a bit of a trickster, transformed the princess into a terrifying dragon."
  • Wooly: "That's not—!"
  • Amanda: "Ah."
  • Wooly: [grumbles]
  • Amanda: "I'm liking where this is going..."
  • Wooly: [sighs; to Riley] "Can we please try my story and then you can tell your own?" [takes a deep breath]

After opening the dragon book and choosing to continue:

  • Wooly: "Oooh, scary! I like it."
  • Amanda: "This story is boring."
  • Wooly: "I think it's a fun story. Okay, let's see."

After opening something other than the dragon book and choosing to continue:

  • Wooly: "You're not telling the right story! Can we please try my story and then you can tell your own? Okay, let's see."

The Opossum appears behind the sofa and climbs on top of it.

  • Wooly: "What happens next? Deep in the dragon's cave, it also held captive a beautiful princess. The dragon threatened the princess with its fiery breath. 'Oh, won't someone save me,' sobbed the princess."

After returning to the TV:

  • Wooly: "Is this the choice you wanna go with?"

If the player clicks the X:

  • Wooly: "Okay! No problem, friend. Let's try again."

Wooly retells the current part of the story.

After opening the knight and dragon books and choosing to continue:

  • Narrator: "In her new dragon form, the princess searched for her knight in hopes of reuniting. When she found him, the knight did not recognize her. She tried to call out to the knight but only breathed fire. The knight slew the dragon, not knowing they were killing their true love."
  • Amanda: "Oh, boy, the knight is gonna regret that!" [laughs]
  • Wooly: [to Riley] "Where are you even getting these ideas?"
The Opossum starts scratching one of Amanda's drawings.

After opening the princess and dragon books and choosing to continue:

  • Wooly: "That poor princess."
  • Amanda: "Ugh, why doesn't the dragon just put her out of her misery?"

The Opossum starts scratching one of Amanda's drawings.

  • Wooly: "Amanda, I'm doing my best to cheer you up!"

After opening something other than the princess and dragon books and choosing to continue:

  • Wooly: "Ummm... a little focus here, maybe?"
  • Amanda: "Who cares. Just tell your dumb story."

The Opossum starts scratching one of Amanda's drawings.

  • Wooly: "Amanda, I'm doing my best to cheer you up!"

The two notice the Opossum.

  • Amanda: "What the... Those are my drawings, you weirdo!"

It starts scratching another.

  • Amanda: [to Riley] "He's going to tear it! Stop him!"

It then starts licking the drawing before opening its mouth wide.

After clicking the Opossum, it falls over and then off the couch. A faint whistling sound is heard, followed by a splash.

  • Amanda: "I thought today couldn't get any worse..."

If the player does not stop the Opossum, it eats the drawing, chokes on it, then spits it out onto the camera. After the paper falls, the Opossum is gone.

  • Amanda: "I'm already having the worst day ever, and then that guy eats my drawing? I worked so hard on those. It's not fair!"
  • Wooly: "Come on, Amanda, it'll be okay!"

  • Wooly: [shrugs] "Maybe finishing the story will cheer you up?"

Amanda goes to continue listening.

  • Wooly: "Um... okay. Well, where were we? Oh, yeah! The knight rushed to the dragon's lair. There, the knight found the dragon guarding the entrance to its cave. The knight drew a sword and bravely faced the dragon! The dragon roared but the knight did not back down! After a long battle, the knight delivered a fatal blow and slew the dragon!"

The Anomaly begins twitching.

After returning to the TV:

  • Wooly: "Have you made your pick?"

If the player clicks the X:

  • Wooly: "Go ahead and make another choice. I'll wait for you."

Wooly briefly retells the current part of the story.

After opening the knight and princess books and choosing to continue:

  • Narrator: "Right before drawing its last breath, the dragon transformed back into the princess. Horrified by what they had done, the sobbing knight embraced the princess's lifeless form."
  • Wooly: "Noooo! That's not—!"
  • Amanda: "It's so tragic. I love it! Keep going!"
  • Wooly: "Hm, no, that's not how the story goes at all! There was a big battle! The brave knight prevailed! And-And then..."

After opening the knight and dragon books and choosing to continue:

  • Wooly: "Wow! What a brave knight!"
  • Amanda: [sarcastically] "Wow, what a creative story!"
  • Wooly: "Let's get to the grand finale!"

After opening something other than the knight and dragon books and choosing to continue:

  • Wooly: "I'm starting to think you're messing with me, and it's not nice! Please let me finish my story!"

  • Wooly: "The princess emerged from the shadows of the cave! 'You saved me!' she cried. She embraced the knight, and they traveled back to the princess's kingdom, where they lived happily ever after..."

After returning to the TV:

  • Wooly: "Okay, is that your selection?"

If the player clicks the X:

  • Wooly: "Okay, now, this is the big finish so really think about it."

Wooly retells the current part of the story.

After opening the knight book and choosing to continue:

  • Narrator: "Lamenting that they had killed their one true love, the knight resolved to wander the world alone... forever."
  • Wooly: "Well, I tried..."

After opening the knight and princess books and choosing to continue:

  • Amanda: "Could that story have been any more boring? Why did you even waste my time?"

After opening something other than the knight and princess books and choosing to continue:

  • Amanda: "That makes no sense."

If the player successfully told their version of the story:

Wooly's eye twitches.

  • Amanda: "Wow, I actually feel a lot better after hearing that sad story."

The Anomaly roars and goes to attack Riley.

  • Amanda: "No! [it stops] They helped me feel better."

The Anomaly slams its fists on the floor, roars, and then retreats. Wooly is now absent.

  • Amanda: "You knew exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you."
The tape ends with Hameln Entertainment's logo.

If the player told their version of the story but made at least one error:

  • Amanda: "I really thought you were going to tell me a good story. Now I feel even worse. Why did you do that to me? Do you even care at all? Have I just been wasting my time?!"
The Anomaly roars and goes to attack Riley, killing them. The tape ends with Hameln Entertainment's logo offscreen before it cuts.

If the player successfully told Wooly's story:

  • Wooly: "I just love a happy ending. [to Riley] Don't you?"

If the player told Wooly's story but made at least one error:

  • Wooly: [grumbles] "I'm not sure if I want to tell stories with you anymore!"
  • Amanda: "That whole story was just a bunch of nonsense! Why did you even waste my time?! I'm having a terrible day, and you made it even worse!"
The Anomaly roars and goes to attack Riley, killing them. The tape ends with Hameln Entertainment's logo offscreen before it cuts.

Trivia[]

  • Since the "bark" clips (the videos that play while the player is away from the TV) do not accommodate the Opossum and Amanda's drawing, the two can respectively disappear and reappear during the clips.
    • Additionally, after the next story section, there are no alternate clips if Amanda's drawing was eaten.
  • While Riley looks at the Anomaly after telling their version of the story, Wooly faints out of view. Only the thud is heard from the player's perspective.
  • To support localization, yes and no prompts that appeared when the player returned to the TV were replaced with the checkmark and X in V1.1.0.
  • There is a clip if the player answers with "talk" to Amanda's question. While it is accepted as an answer, the clip does not play. The transcript is:
    • Amanda: "There's nobody who will understand."
    • Wooly: "I understand, Amanda."
    • Amanda: "Yeah, you'd like to think that, wouldn't you?"
